About the Tip Calculator
The tip calculator works out the tip, the total, and what each person pays when you split the bill. It can leave tax out of the tip, round each share up to a whole amount, and tells you when the shares don’t divide evenly, so the money adds up to the cent.
How to use it
- 1 Enter the bill amount.
- 2 Pick a tip percent, or type your own.
- 3 Set how many people are splitting the bill.
- 4 Open “Tax & rounding” to tip before tax or round each share up, then copy the share link to send it to the group.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a tip?
Multiply the bill by the tip percent and divide by 100. A 15% tip on 80 is 80 × 15 ÷ 100 = 12, so the total is 92. A quick way for 20%: move the decimal point one place left and double it.
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
Etiquette guides usually say before tax, because tax is not part of the service. Enter the tax shown on the bill under “Tax & rounding” and the calculator works out the tip on the amount before tax.
How much should I tip?
It depends on the country. In the US, 15–20% is usual at sit-down restaurants. In the UK, 10–12.5% is common and often added as a service charge. In many countries, rounding up is enough. Check the bill for a service charge before adding a tip.
How do I split a bill evenly?
Add the tip to the bill and divide the total by the number of people. When it doesn’t divide to the cent, some people pay one cent more, and the calculator shows how many.
What does “round up each share” do?
It rounds what each person pays up to the next whole amount, so nobody needs coins. The extra goes to the tip, and the calculator shows the tip percent that works out to.
