Bangla Typing – Avro Phonetic

Spell the word as it sounds, in English letters: “ami” gives আমি, “bhalo” gives ভালো, “bangladesh” gives বাংলাদেশ. Vowels after a consonant become vowel signs on their own, and consonants typed together join into conjuncts, so “bondhu” gives বন্ধু.

It uses the same Avro phonetic rule table, published by OmicronLab, so every word comes out the same as in Avro’s phonetic mode. On top of that it fixes the spelling of about 130 everyday words that the rules alone get wrong, such as “amra” (আমরা) and “tomra” (তোমরা). Untick “Fix common words” to get pure Avro output.

Bangla has more letters than English, so capitals are used for the extra ones: t is ত and T is ট, d is দ and D is ড, n is ন and N is ণ, sh is শ and Sh is ষ, and R is ড়. For long vowels use capitals too: I is ঈ / ী and U is ঊ / ূ, while O gives ও / ো.

Type “rr” before a consonant for reph: “dhorrmo” gives ধর্ম. A “y” after a consonant gives য-ফলা: “bidyaloy” gives বিদ্যালয়. A “w” after a consonant gives ব-ফলা: “bishwas” gives বিশ্বাস. Two commas give a visible hasanta, and a backtick (`) stops two letters joining: “am`ra” gives আমরা.

Yes. Phone keyboards send whole words at once, so on a phone each word turns into Bangla when you press space, with a preview under the box while you type. Switching off your keyboard’s autocorrect for English helps. You can also type everything in English and press “Convert English to Bangla”.
