There is no way to recover a forgotten password, not even for us. Keep it somewhere safe.

Limit what people can do (optional)
Allowed actions

Acrobat, Chrome, Edge, and most readers respect these limits, but some apps ignore them. Only the open password truly keeps people out.

Your PDF is protected and downloading.

It will ask for your password every time it is opened.

Save your owner password

You need it to lift the printing, copying, or editing limits later. It is shown only once.

Frequently Asked Questions

How secure is the password?

The PDF is encrypted with AES-256, the strongest standard PDF encryption. Without the password the content cannot be read. A long password of several words is much harder to guess than a short one.

Is my PDF or password sent anywhere?

No. The PDF is encrypted inside your browser. Neither the file nor the password is uploaded, so we never see them.

What if I forget the password?

It cannot be recovered, by us or anyone else. Keep a copy of the original PDF or store the password in a password manager.

What is the owner password?

It controls the limits on printing, copying, and editing. Anyone with the open password can read the PDF, but only the owner password lets a PDF app lift those limits.

Which apps can open the protected PDF?

Adobe Acrobat and Reader, Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari and Preview on Mac, and the PDF apps on iPhone and Android. Choose AES-128 only for very old readers.

How do I remove the password later?

Open Unlock PDF, choose the file, and enter the password. You get a copy without a password.
