About the Expense Tracker

The expense tracker is a simple money log. Add what you earn and spend, and it shows each month’s income, spending, balance, and where the money went by category. There is no account: your entries are saved only in this browser, and you can export them to a CSV file at any time.

How to use it

  1. 1 Pick Expense or Income, enter the amount, choose a category, and add a note if you like.
  2. 2 Use the arrows to move between months, or choose “All time”.
  3. 3 Check the category breakdown to see where most of your money goes.
  4. 4 Export a CSV to back up your data or open it in Excel, and import it again on another device.

Frequently asked questions

Where is my data stored?

Only in this browser’s local storage, on this device. Nothing is sent to our server and there is no account. Clearing your browser data or using a private window will remove it, so export a CSV backup now and then.

Can I use it on my phone and my computer?

Each browser keeps its own entries. To move them, export a CSV on one device and import it on the other. Entries that are already there are skipped, so importing the same file twice does not double them.

Can I import my bank statement?

Yes, if you can download it as CSV. The first row needs columns named Date and Amount, with dates as YYYY-MM-DD. Type, Category, and Note columns are optional; without a Type column, negative amounts are counted as spending and positive amounts as income.

How do I track spending against a budget?

Use the Budget Planner to set how much goes to needs, wants, and savings, then log your spending here. At the end of the month, compare the category totals with your plan and adjust next month’s budget.

What is a good savings rate?

The savings rate is the share of your income you did not spend. Saving 20% follows the 50/30/20 rule, but any steady positive rate is a good start. If it is negative, you spent more than you earned that month.
