Frequently Asked Questions

How much smaller will my PDF get?

It depends on what is inside. Scans and PDFs full of photos often shrink by 50–90%. PDFs that are mostly text are already small, so they may only shrink a little.

Which compression level should I choose?

Start with Recommended: photos are scaled to at most 2000 pixels and saved as good-quality JPEG. Strong goes to 1400 pixels and lower quality for the smallest file that still reads well. Light only removes unused data and never touches image quality.

Will my text still be selectable?

Yes, on the Light, Recommended, and Strong levels. Only Maximum turns each page into a picture, which makes text unsearchable but shrinks scanned documents the most.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The PDF is compressed inside your browser, so it never leaves your device. You can even disconnect from the internet once the page has loaded.

Can I compress a password-protected PDF?

Yes, if you know the password. The compressed copy is saved without a password, so add one again with Protect PDF if you need it.

Why didn’t my PDF get smaller?

Text, vector drawings, and fonts are already stored efficiently, and charts or logos are kept sharp on purpose. If a PDF has no large photos, try Maximum only when it is a scan.
