Frequently asked questions

How is EPF calculated?

You pay 12% of your basic pay plus DA into EPF every month, and your employer pays another 12%. Of the employer’s share, 8.33% of your pay up to ₹25,000 (at most ₹2,083 a month) goes to the Employees’ Pension Scheme, and the rest goes into your EPF account. Interest is worked out monthly on the balance and added once a year.

What is the EPF interest rate?

The EPF interest rate is 8.25% for 2025-26, the same as in 2023-24 and 2024-25. The EPFO board recommends it each year and the Ministry of Finance approves it. The calculator uses the rate you enter for every future year.

What is the new EPF wage ceiling?

From 17 September 2026 the EPF wage ceiling is ₹25,000 a month, up from ₹15,000. Employees earning up to ₹25,000 must be covered, and the EPS share is 8.33% of pay up to ₹25,000, so at most ₹2,083 a month, up from ₹1,250. Some employers pay EPF on the ceiling only; tick that option if yours does.

Is EPF interest taxable?

The interest on your own contributions above ₹2.5 lakh a year (₹5 lakh if your employer does not contribute) is taxable. The calculator warns you when your contribution, including VPF, crosses that. Withdrawals after 5 years of continuous service are tax-free.

What is VPF?

The Voluntary Provident Fund lets you pay more than 12% of your basic pay into EPF, up to 100%. It earns the same interest, but your employer does not match it. Add the extra percentage in the VPF box to see what it adds.

Does the EPS money come back to me?

The EPS share is not part of your EPF balance. It pays a monthly pension from age 58 if you have 10 years of service, or can be withdrawn as a lump sum if you leave before 10 years. The calculator shows how much goes to EPS but leaves it out of the EPF balance.

When can I withdraw my EPF?

You can withdraw it all at 58, or after two months without a job. Partial withdrawals are allowed for a house, medical treatment, marriage or education, subject to EPFO’s rules and years of service.
