Frequently Asked Questions

Can I unlock a PDF without the password?

Only if it opens without one. Some PDFs open freely but block printing or copying; those limits are removed straight away. A PDF that asks for a password to open needs that password, because its content is encrypted with it.

Is it legal to unlock a PDF?

Unlock only PDFs that are yours or that you have permission to change, such as your own bank statements, payslips, or tax forms. Do not use it to get around someone else’s copy protection.

Is my PDF or password uploaded?

No. The PDF is decrypted inside your browser. The file and the password never leave your device.

Does unlocking change the content?

No. Pages, text, images, links, and form fields stay the same. Only the encryption is removed.

Why do banks send locked PDFs?

Statements and e-receipts are often locked with your date of birth, account number, or part of your phone number. The email that came with the PDF usually explains the format.

How do I put a password back on?

Use Protect PDF to add a new password with AES-256 encryption.
