Frequently asked questions

How is PPF interest calculated?

PPF interest is worked out every month on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day of the month, at the yearly rate ÷ 12, and added to the account once a year on 31 March. So ₹1,50,000 a year deposited by 5 April at 7.1% grows to about ₹40.68 lakh after 15 years, of which ₹22.5 lakh is your own money.

What is the current PPF interest rate?

The PPF rate is 7.1% a year for October to December 2026. The Ministry of Finance reviews it every quarter, and it has stayed at 7.1% since April 2020. The calculator assumes the rate you enter for the whole term.

Is it better to deposit in PPF in April?

Yes. A deposit made by 5 April earns interest for the whole year. Spreading ₹1,50,000 over twelve monthly deposits by the 5th earns less, about ₹1.24 lakh less over 15 years at 7.1%, because each deposit earns for fewer months. A deposit made after the 5th misses that month’s interest.

What are the PPF deposit limits?

You must deposit at least ₹500 and at most ₹1,50,000 in a financial year, in a lump sum or in instalments. Anything above ₹1,50,000 earns no interest and is not tax-deductible. A missed year makes the account inactive until you pay ₹50 for each year missed plus the ₹500 minimum.

Can I extend my PPF account after 15 years?

Yes, in blocks of 5 years, as many times as you like. You can extend with deposits by filing Form 4 within a year of maturity, or simply leave the account without deposits, in which case the balance keeps earning interest. Pick the extension in the calculator and choose whether you keep depositing.

Is PPF tax-free?

PPF is “exempt-exempt-exempt”: deposits up to ₹1,50,000 count under section 80C in the old tax regime, and the interest and the maturity amount are tax-free. The new tax regime gives no 80C deduction, but the interest and maturity stay tax-free.

When can I withdraw from PPF?

You can make one partial withdrawal a year from the seventh financial year, up to half of the balance at the end of the fourth year before, or of the year before, whichever is lower. You can take a loan against PPF from the third to the sixth year. Closing it early is allowed after 5 years only for reasons such as serious illness or higher education, with 1% less interest.
