Frequently asked questions
How do I add fractions with different denominators?
Find the lowest common denominator, rewrite both fractions over it, then add the numerators. For 1/2 + 1/3 the lowest common denominator is 6, so 1/2 = 3/6 and 1/3 = 2/6, and 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.
How do I multiply fractions?
Multiply the numerators together and the denominators together, then simplify. 2/3 × 3/4 = 6/12, which simplifies to 1/2.
How do I divide fractions?
Flip the second fraction and multiply: dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal. 3/4 ÷ 1/2 = 3/4 × 2/1 = 6/4 = 1 1/2.
How do I type a mixed number?
Put a space between the whole number and the fraction: 2 1/4 means two and a quarter. For a negative mixed number, put the minus sign first: -2 1/4.
How do I simplify a fraction?
Divide the top and bottom by their greatest common divisor. For 18/24 the greatest common divisor is 6, so 18/24 = 3/4. Choose “Simplify / convert” to see the steps.
How do I convert a decimal to a fraction?
Write the decimal over 10, 100, 1000, and so on (one zero per decimal place), then simplify. 0.75 = 75/100 = 3/4. Type the decimal in “Simplify / convert” to do it for you.
What do the brackets in a decimal mean?
The digits in brackets repeat forever. 1/3 = 0.(3) means 0.333…, and 1/6 = 0.1(6) means 0.1666…. Very long patterns are cut off after 60 digits and end with “…”.
