Frequently asked questions

How do I write an amount in words on a cheque?

In India and Bangladesh, write the currency first and end with "Only", for example "Rupees Twenty-Five Thousand Only" or "Taka One Lakh Fifty Thousand Only". On a US check, spell the dollars and write cents as a fraction: "Five hundred and 00/100". Start at the far left of the line and strike through any space left over.

What is the difference between lakh/crore and million/billion?

They group the same number differently. 1 lakh is 1,00,000 (one hundred thousand), 10 lakh is one million, 1 crore is 1,00,00,000 (ten million), and 100 crore is one billion. India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Nepal use lakh and crore.

Should I write "one hundred and five" or "one hundred five"?

Both are correct. British, Indian and Bangladeshi English usually include "and"; American English usually leaves it out, especially on checks. Use the "and" switch to choose.

Can it write numbers in Bangla and Hindi?

Yes. Every number is also spelled in Bangla (এক লক্ষ পঁচিশ হাজার) and Hindi (एक लाख पच्चीस हज़ार), with the amount in taka or rupees ending in মাত্র / मात्र for cheques and receipts.

How are decimals written?

For money, the decimals become paise, paisa, cents or pence, rounded to two places. Without a currency they are read digit by digit, so 3.14 is "three point one four".

How big a number can it convert?

Up to 15 digits before the decimal point, which is just under one thousand trillion (99 lakh crore).

Is my number sent anywhere?

No. The words are worked out in your browser, so nothing you type leaves your device.
