About the India Income Tax Calculator

The India income tax calculator works out your personal income tax for FY 2026-27 and FY 2025-26 under both regimes at once. It takes off the standard deduction, applies the slabs for your age, the section 87A rebate and marginal relief, the surcharge on high incomes, and the 4% health and education cess. In the old regime it also takes off HRA, 80C, 80D, NPS and home loan interest, and it tells you how much you would need to claim before the old regime beats the new one.

How to use it

  1. 1 Pick the financial year and your age group.
  2. 2 Enter your gross salary per month or per year, and any other income such as interest or rent.
  3. 3 Open the old-regime deductions if you claim HRA, 80C, 80D, NPS or home loan interest.
  4. 4 Compare the two regimes, read the slab-by-slab working, and copy the share link if you need it.

Frequently asked questions

What are the income tax slabs for FY 2026-27?

In the new regime: nil up to ₹4 lakh, 5% from ₹4 to 8 lakh, 10% from ₹8 to 12 lakh, 15% from ₹12 to 16 lakh, 20% from ₹16 to 20 lakh, 25% from ₹20 to 24 lakh, and 30% above ₹24 lakh. Budget 2026 kept the slabs of FY 2025-26. In the old regime: nil up to ₹2.5 lakh (₹3 lakh at 60 to 79, ₹5 lakh at 80+), 5% up to ₹5 lakh, 20% up to ₹10 lakh, and 30% above.

Is income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free?

Yes, in the new regime, for residents. The section 87A rebate of up to ₹60,000 cancels the tax on taxable income up to ₹12 lakh. Salaried people also get the ₹75,000 standard deduction, so a salary of up to ₹12.75 lakh pays no tax. Just above the limit, marginal relief keeps your tax from being more than the income above ₹12 lakh. The rebate does not cover special-rate income such as capital gains on shares.

Which is better, the new or the old tax regime?

For most people the new regime is cheaper, because its rates are lower and income up to ₹12 lakh is tax-free. The old regime only wins if you claim large deductions: HRA on a high rent, the full ₹1.5 lakh under 80C, 80D health insurance, NPS and home loan interest. The calculator shows both and the amount of deductions at which the old regime breaks even.

How is HRA exemption calculated?

The tax-free part of HRA is the lowest of: the HRA you receive, the rent you pay minus 10% of basic pay plus DA, and 50% of basic plus DA in a metro city or 40% elsewhere. From FY 2026-27 the Income-tax Rules 2026 count Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Ahmedabad as metros along with Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai. HRA can only be claimed in the old regime.

What is the standard deduction for FY 2026-27?

₹75,000 in the new regime and ₹50,000 in the old regime, for salary and pension. You do not need any proof; it is taken off your salary automatically.

When is surcharge charged on income tax?

When taxable income is over ₹50 lakh: 10% of the tax above ₹50 lakh, 15% above ₹1 crore, and 25% above ₹2 crore. The old regime has a 37% rate above ₹5 crore; the new regime stops at 25%. Marginal relief keeps the extra tax from being more than the income above each limit. The 4% cess is then charged on the tax plus surcharge.

Does the new Income-tax Act 2025 change my tax?

The Income-tax Act 2025 replaced the 1961 Act from 1 April 2026. It renames the financial and assessment year as the tax year and renumbers the sections, but it keeps the same slabs, rebate and deductions. People still search for the old section numbers, such as 80C and 87A, so this page uses them.

How up to date are the rates?

The rates were last checked in October 2026 against Budget 2026 and the Income-tax Rules 2026. This is an estimate, not tax advice: it does not cover capital gains at special rates, agricultural income, or every deduction. Check the Income Tax Department’s calculator or a tax adviser before you file.
