Frequently asked questions

Does 112 work everywhere?

112 is the emergency number across the European Union and works in 22 of the 33 countries listed here. It does not work everywhere: in the United States, Canada and Mexico the number is 911, and countries such as Pakistan, Brazil and Japan have their own numbers. Check the number before you travel.

Which countries use 911?

Of the countries listed here, United States, Canada, Mexico and Saudi Arabia use 911.

What if my country has separate numbers for each service?

Some countries, such as Japan, Pakistan, Brazil and the UAE, have different numbers for the police, an ambulance and the fire service. Each country page lists them side by side. If you call the wrong one, tell the operator what is happening; they will usually connect you.

Can I call an emergency number without a SIM card or credit?

In many countries a mobile phone can call the emergency number without credit, and in some without a SIM card, but the rules differ from country to country. Do not rely on it: keep your phone charged and topped up when you travel.
