About the Subtitle Editor

Subtitle Editor adds captions to your videos in one place. Make them automatically: Whisper listens to the speech and writes timed captions in 99 languages, or translates them to English. Or import an SRT or VTT file, or type captions while the video plays. The caption shows over the video as you work, so you can fix misheard words, set times to the current moment, split, merge or shift everything at once. Then pick a style, such as classic white with an outline, a box, yellow or bold Shorts captions, and burn the captions into the video, add them as a track viewers can switch on, or download SRT and VTT. Bangla, Hindi, Arabic and every other script are drawn correctly, and the video never leaves your device.

How to use it

  1. 1 Drop in a video, and an SRT or VTT file if you already have one.
  2. 2 Press “Make captions automatically” and choose the spoken language, or import or add captions by hand. Play the video and fix the words and times.
  3. 3 Choose a style and press “Burn captions into video”, or add them as a subtitle track, or download an SRT file.

Frequently asked questions

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. The speech model and the video engine are downloaded to your browser and run on your device, so the video and its captions never leave it. Your captions are saved as a draft in this browser, so a reload does not lose your work.

How do I add subtitles to a video for free?

Drop the video in, press “Make captions automatically” (or import an SRT), check the words while it plays, then press “Burn captions into video” and download the MP4. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on length beyond your device’s memory.

What is the difference between burning in and a subtitle track?

Burned-in captions become part of the picture, so they show everywhere, including Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, TikTok and WhatsApp, in the style you picked. A subtitle track is added instantly without re-encoding, but viewers must turn it on (CC) in their player, and most social apps ignore it.

Can it make Bangla or Hindi subtitles?

Yes. Whisper understands Bangla, Hindi, Urdu, Arabic and more than 90 other languages, though it is most accurate in English, so check the words. Captions in any script are drawn by your browser, so joined letters and vowel signs come out right when burned in.

Can I translate the subtitles to English?

Yes. Pick the spoken language and tick “Translate to English” before making captions. Whisper then writes English captions for speech in any of its languages.

How do I fix captions that are out of sync?

If every caption is early or late by the same amount, type the difference in “Shift all by” and press Earlier or Later. To fix one caption, play to the right moment and press “now” next to its start or end time.

Which subtitle files can I import and export?

Import SRT and WebVTT (.vtt) files from YouTube, editing apps or other sites. Download your captions as SRT, which works almost everywhere, or VTT for web players.

Why does burning in take a while?

Burning in re-encodes every frame of the video on your own device instead of a server. Expect about as long as the video plays on a recent computer, and longer on phones. Adding a subtitle track takes only seconds.
