About the Online Timer & Stopwatch

The online timer counts down from any time up to 99 hours and rings an alarm at zero. Switch to the stopwatch to time laps to the hundredth of a second, or to the Pomodoro timer for focus rounds with breaks. Time is read from your device clock, so it stays right even when the tab is in the background.

How to use it

  1. 1 Pick a preset or type the hours, minutes, and seconds.
  2. 2 Press Start (or the space bar). The time left shows in the browser tab too.
  3. 3 Pause, add a minute, or reset at any time; press F for full screen.
  4. 4 When the alarm rings, press Stop alarm. Copy the link to share the same timer.

Frequently asked questions

Does the timer keep running in another tab?

Yes. The timer works out the time left from your device clock, so it stays accurate when you switch tabs or minimise the browser, and the alarm still rings. Closing the tab, or the phone putting the browser to sleep, stops it.

Why is there no sound when the timer ends?

Browsers only play sound after you tap the page, which pressing Start does. Check that “Play an alarm sound” is ticked, the tab is not muted, and your device volume is up. On iPhone, the silent switch also mutes web pages.

How do I set a timer for a custom time?

Type the hours, minutes, and seconds into the boxes before you press Start. Minutes above 59 are fine: 90 minutes works as 1 hour 30 minutes. The +1 min button adds time while it runs.

What is the Pomodoro technique?

A way of working in focused blocks: 25 minutes of work, then a 5-minute break, and a longer 15 to 30-minute break after four rounds. The Pomodoro tab moves between these by itself, and you can change every length.

How accurate is the stopwatch?

It shows hundredths of a second and is read from your device clock, which is accurate to a few milliseconds. The real limit is your reaction time when you press the button, about a fifth of a second.

Can I use it full screen in a classroom?

Yes. Press the full screen button or F, and the time fills the screen in large digits. The screen stays on while the timer runs on browsers that support it.
